Stump Grinding in Springfield, MO
After a tree is cut down, the stump and the top of the root flare stay in the ground unless you grind them out. Grinding takes the stump below grade so the area can be mowed over, replanted, or just cleared without a tripping hazard sitting there for years. What's left is a pile of wood chips in the hole where the stump was.

How It Works
Our Process for Stump Grinding
- 1
Locate and mark utilities
Before grinding we confirm utility line locations in the work area. Missouri One Call is the standard first step. This matters especially in older Springfield neighborhoods where line depths vary.
- 2
Clear the area around the stump
We remove rocks, decorative borders, or anything close to the stump that could become a projectile or damage the grinder. This takes a few minutes but it matters.
- 3
Grind the stump below grade
We grind down far enough that the area can be mowed over or replanted. Standard depth gets us below the surface but not through the lateral roots extending outward.
- 4
Chip the grindings
The grinding process produces a pile of wood chips and soil mixed together. That material sits in the hole where the stump was. It settles and breaks down over time.
- 5
Discuss what to do with the grindings
We can leave the chip pile in place, spread it over the area, or haul it. Most people leave it. If you're replanting soon, we haul it so you're not planting into decomposing wood.
What's included
- Grinding the stump and root flare below grade in the immediate trunk area
- Utility marking coordination before grinding begins
- Clearing the stump perimeter of debris before the grinder starts
- Leaving chip material in place or spreading it over the area
- Basic site cleanup after the grinder is done
What's not included
- Lateral root removal extending out from the stump — roots running under lawn or hardscape are not part of standard grinding
- Hauling the chip pile off-site unless specifically discussed and agreed before the job
- Backfilling the hole with topsoil or reseeding — that's a separate scope if you need it
Real Situations
Common Scenarios in Springfield
A homeowner in Sunset Hills had a silver maple removed last fall and the stump is in the middle of the backyard where kids play.
We grind it down past grade so the area is safe to mow and play on. Silver maple stumps tend to be wide at the flare, so we work through the full width of the base, not just the center of the trunk.
A homeowner is having a fence installed and the old stump sits right on the property line where a post needs to go.
We grind specifically to depth and location so the fence contractor can set their post. We coordinate with the homeowner on timing so the grinding happens before the fence crew arrives.
A homeowner has three old stumps in the front yard from trees removed at different times, all at different stages of decay.
Older decayed stumps grind faster than fresh ones, but the depth still needs to be consistent. We do all three in sequence and leave the yard flat enough that it can be mowed uniformly without scalping or dipping around the old stump locations.
Springfield Context
Why this matters in Springfield
Springfield has a lot of silver maples, Bradford pears, and other fast-growing species that were planted in subdivisions from the 1970s onward. Many of those trees have been removed in the last decade as they aged out, leaving stumps across older parts of town like Division Street corridors and south Springfield subdivisions. Clay soil here doesn't break down wood fast, so a stump can sit visible and solid for a long time before it starts to decay on its own.
Straight Talk
About pricing & scope
Price on stump grinding depends mainly on stump diameter and how many stumps you have. Larger stumps take longer. Stumps close to a structure, utility line, or buried irrigation system may need a different approach that adds time. If we find concrete or heavy rock embedded in an old stump during grinding, we'll stop and talk about how to proceed.
